Beliefs are a state of mind when a person accepts something as true, does not doubt its credibility, and is ready to defend and argue for it.
Beliefs are generalizations, drawn from the data of our experience and are typically updated by experience.

Beliefs determine how events are given meaning. They are at the core of motivation and culture.  
Each person holds a different concept of right and wrong, hard and easy, possible and absurd, expensive and cheap, fast and slow, beautiful and ugly, good and bad, and so on. And his or her concepts are defined by the beliefs. Usually, they take the form of statements of judgment, rules, or causal relationships.

Our mindset encompasses our beliefs and values that shape our concept of the world.

Dr. Bruce Lipton Ph.D. who researches the origins of beliefs at Stanford Medical School, discovers something very interesting.

* 40% Own Beliefs.

Some beliefs we build on our own based on our own life experience and knowledge from textbooks, books, the Internet, the media, or significant others.

 

* 60 % Inherited Beliefs.

Other beliefs we inherit from our parents and the society we live in. These are norms of behavior, orders, laws, folklore, etc.

Unconscious Beliefs. It is important to emphasize that we have conscious and unconscious types of beliefs – those out of awareness. The most influential beliefs are often out of awareness.

What are the unconscious beliefs? Ask yourself what is “normal” to you.

Whatever each of us accepts to be “normal” is based on our unconscious beliefs.

Beliefs are at the core of our conclusions about the causation, meaning, or boundaries in the world around us, our behavior, our capabilities, and our identities.

Beliefs and values relate to the answers to the WHY questions.

If you want to get to know someone better just ask them “why”

If you want to find out what is their motivation in life just ask them “why”.

If you want to explore their values just ask them “why”.

If you want to interact with Impact, just ask them “why”.

Shades of Beliefs
  • Empowering Beliefs: Positive beliefs that provide the motivation and confidence necessary to travel our paths to our desired states and goals.
  • Limiting Beliefs: Beliefs that restrain and hinder us. They center around the issues of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness. They operate like “thought viruses”.

Both our empowering and limiting beliefs form our mindset. They are interconnected, one belief leads to another.

Beliefs attract each other like high-intensity magnets. They are self-organizing and self-fulfilling.

Our beliefs also change with time. It’s a dynamic belief system.

The purpose of our beliefs is to guide us in areas where we don’t know the reality. That is why beliefs have such a profound influence on our perceptions and visions of the future.

To reach our outcomes, we must believe that something can occur even though we are not certain that it will happen. And we need GOOD REASONS to believe in that. The more reasons we have to believe in something, the more we increase our chances for success.

To bolster our own beliefs or to influence the beliefs of others, we must identify good reasons why.  This involves finding and supplying the answers to several important WHY questions, such as:

  1. Why is it possible?
  2. Why am I/are we capable?
  3. Why it is desirable?
  4. Why is this the appropriate path?
  5. Why am I/are we responsible?
